You seem to have a common idea here with both these suggestions, which is to spend a lot of time with someone on campus and write about their experience -- to alk a mile in another's shoes and describe it. That could work. I would suggest, however, that you take a more focused view. How about this: you spend a week or so going on rounds and working through the chores of one person or a crew working for the university FACILITIES MAINTENANCE department and write about just what it takes to keep a cement structure in winter up and running. This would be the same idea you have -- but give you a directed point to be writing about.
